Marketplace 2016

Let me start by saying that I have never, ever been to church camp. Ever. And I never wanted to either. But we had the opportunity to take the kids to Ruggles Camp here in Kentucky for a 3 day long day camp so we did. And I’m glad we did. What an amazing time! imageThe camp program was based on creation and they used Psalm 139:14 as their memory verse on the second day, which I loved. I’m a huge proponent of memorizing the bible. Each day kids could go to a table at the Marketplace and recite their verse for a prize. That second day, they got a little snake because they’d been learning about the story of Adam and Eve in the garden. Ha!

In addition to memory verses, kids experienced awesome worship through prayer and camp songs. Some of the songs I was familiar with (or at least with the contemporary version) and I sang and danced with Sam. I even caught Oliver dancing!

The kids all had fun making new friends, learning stories from the bible, gardening, playing games, singing, and doing crafts. I think each of them made friends from the surrounding areas and I hope these friendships will last summer after summer. It was great to watch Dylan bond with kids his age, but most especially Oliver. He doesn’t often come out of his shell, but he excels in situations like this. His leader said he was fantastic kid. I’m not writing this to brag, I’m proud and a little shocked that he would do so well so soon after moving to this new place.

I spent the majority of my time with the baby/preschool group. I don’t typically love this age group (I prefer working with kindergarten and up), but I had so much fun. These kiddos were too cute and by the end of today, I had made a new friend. I loved working with the various volunteers throughout the camp and making connections with pastors, their wives, and people involved in the Methodist Church. I loved watching Samuel interact with new people, but especially with children close to his age.

Overall, Marketplace was wonderful and an experience I will not forget. All the kiddos are looking forward to next year’s camp and Dylan is looking forward to junior camp next year! If you are in or around eastern Kentucky, I highly suggest you join us!
